While admiring the wild flowers in the park today, a volunteer gardener told me what corncockles were. I always think it’s strange that meadow flowers need a designated area – in case they get out of hand!
The bedding plants newly set in soil
Have colours chosen for artistic effect
Well spaced
As if lined up on invisible graph paper
Beautiful -
But too tidy
A lovely show garden nonetheless
Then behind a fence
As if they might otherwise
Break free
The wild flowers
No pattern to their growing
Tall and waving
Like blossom on a gentle current
Poppies and corncockles
A feast for the bees
And the eyes
