Poetry on roots, love, life and faith

Risk assessment 2026

I seem to have rather neglected this blog of late – sorry. There have been reasons.

Firstly I decided the time has probably come to think about writing another book. So I have been writing various poems, and I thought I’d better not share them all just yet or there’ll be nothing new to go in the book!

Secondly, I have been entering some of my poetry into competitions – not lots of them, just one or two, but then you aren’t allowed to share the poems or the results online until the whole competition has finished. Only fair really. Anyway. I got through the first round of Bridport again. This competition is rapidly becoming my favourite. It’s so lovely that they take the time to say No you didn’t win, BUT we did like your poem…..enough to include it in the second round anyway!!

Thirdly, man flu. I’m pretty sure that’s what I have….

(By the way, this poem will make the most sense to anyone working in British primary schools, years 3 to 6. When I worked as a teaching assistant a few years ago, much teaching went into fronted adverbials and practising using them. I did feel for the poor teachers who had to go over and over this…..!!)
